Exploring sustainable forestry through experiential immersion

With FSC® Switzerland and PH Zürich

How can we make the complex world of Swiss (or European) forestry and the wood industry tangible, engaging, and even fun – especially for students and young adults? This question sparked our latest collaboration with FSC® Switzerland (Forest Stewardship Council®) and PH Zürich (University of Education), resulting in WaldWege (Forest Paths), an immersive strategy game that brings the challenges of forest management to life.

Developed through a collaborative process involving key stakeholders from across the forestry sector – including WaldSchweiz, FSC® Switzerland and Germany, the Association of Swiss Foresters (ASF), Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH), WWF, ETH Zürich, WSL, and students – WaldWege invites players to explore how their decisions shape the forests of tomorrow.

Step Into the Shoes of a Forest Manager or Wood transformer

In WaldWege, players don’t just learn about sustainable forestry – they become part of it. Taking on roles such as forest managers, sawmill operators, or construction planners, they face real-world dilemmas across the wood supply chain. Each choice has consequences that unfold over 150 years of simulated forest development, revealing the long-term impacts of today’s actions.

This isn’t just a game – it’s an interactive learning environment where experimentation is encouraged, trade-offs are explored, and the intricate balance between economic, ecological, and social forest functions becomes clear.

WaldWege Game
Key Learning Experiences

Through Waldwege, players:

  • Understand the complexity of multi-functional forests, balancing timber production, conservation, recreation, and biodiversity.

  • Experience long-term impacts, learning how today’s decisions affect forests for generations to come.

  • Confront climate uncertainties, adapting strategies in response to ecological shifts and evolving risks.

  • Navigate global market dynamics, exploring the role of forest certification and international trade in sustainable management.

More Than a Teaching Tool

This initiative is part of the project “Immersive Educational Method for Children & Young Adults: Empowering Educators”, funded by FSC® Switzerland.

Originally designed as an educational game, WaldWege offers value far beyond the classroom. It serves as a platform for knowledge exchange among laypeople as well as professionals and as a catalyst for technical discussions and strategic foresight.

What’s Next

In the second phase, LEAF will support PH Zürich in adapting the game for younger audiences, aligning it with the Swiss educational curriculum and training teachers to run sessions independently. Our goal is to inspire the next generation through learning by doing – and to foster meaningful dialogue about sustainability in forestry from an early age.

Looking ahead, we’re working on expanding the game’s scope to include more advanced decision-making scenarios and clearer insights into the trade-offs faced by industries like construction and other stakeholders along the wood supply chain. We also aim to highlight how sustainable forest management supports overarching goals like the Agenda 2030.
